The Stepford Wives by Ira Levin
At first, I didn't really care about the plot. I wondered why the main protagonist Joanna cared to even mention the neighbors. The women seemed so bland and unremarkable that I didn't get why the author bothered detailing them at all. But then I did get it. And, wow. This book surprised me and made me wonder why I had been robbed of its story all of these years. I must say that even though Ira Levin was a man, he had an amazing knack for picking up on women's personalities and concerns and the issues of oppression and conformity. Even though the story is nothing like his famous ROSEMARY'S BABY, there is a plot twist that chilled me just as this other story did. I love how Joanna suspects something isn't quite right and is willing to do whatever it takes to get to the bottom of it.
