I am ashamed to say that I never read a King book aside from part of Thinner (which for no good reason I never finished). I feel like writing an apology letter to King for waiting this long to read the book which birthed a classic tale that I have seen multiple times. Anyway, what I enjoyed about this novel is the layers of Jack's life and how we get a major connection between his past and present horrifying troubles and behaviors. We get to see life from four perspectives: Wendy's, Jack's, Danny's, and Dick's, and all of them are compelling and tangle up in each other through this scary and complicated web. I was surprised by how little from the movie is NOT in the book and by how much of the book is NOT in the movie. A lot of the iconic scenes from the film are absent, which surprised me, but some of the eerie occurrences in the book are so good that it's a shame that weren't on the big screen. The plot is riddled with tension constantly--there is never a dull moment--just very real problems enclosed within a haunting hotel. Overall, King's writing is outstanding and memorable and I am thankful I finally bought one of his books and will now proudly display it on my shelf.
