Falsify is divided into two main parts: Tina balancing her discomfort at being underneath her grandmother Grace's discipline with her infatuation in seemingly rebellious Billy. The story seems simple enough for this genre. But in the second half, Tina finds Grace's journal from fifty years before and it has some deep dark secrets. Now Tina is balancing a growing relationship with Billy and a newfound interest in her grandmother and we now have not only the typical teenager, but a growing mystery, which is what effectively drives the narrative. Nelson's style is simple and basic, but the content itself is much more. I enjoyed seeing the changes in Tina as she matured and as she formed a stronger and more respectable bond with Grace. Further, Nelson explores the secret past with adroit finesse and treats these serious issues with the delicacy they deserve.
