The Perfect Girl: A Novel Hugely Imperfect

Having read What She Knew, I had high hopes for The Perfect Girl. Instead, the book was a HUGE disappointment. MacMillan can write stories with characters that grip us, but in this novel, she doesn't do much of anything. We have an unnecessary and confusing back-and-forth plot with pointless multiple points of view that don't add anything to the story. There is zero suspense even though this is supposed to be a thriller. An important element of storytelling is to show, not tell, but all MacMillan does is tell. And so we get this very dull and flat characterization. We don't care what happens next. Nothing much does anyway. And sadly we don't care about the characters at all because they do nothing; even when something does happen, the characters simply tell us about it, but don't react. They feel inhumane and terribly uninteresting. There is nothing emotional about the story or the characters.A complete letdown.
