Cujo, a Tale of Love and Isolation

An amazing story of love and isolation. Yes, you read that right. Sure, there's a Saint Bernard named Cujo with rabies. Yep, there's some horrific situations with the dog. But more than anything else, the plot focuses on relationships and how separation can bring the realization of how important someone is. The surprise of Cujo's rabid state interferes in the lives of a handful of people and the dog's miserable state of mind parallels the chaotic rupturing of families torn apart. That which is dear to our hearts is revealed, that we must protect our loved ones. There are unexplained convulsions that one of the character experiences that, just like in the movie version, isn't really explained. I found that disconcerting. I was also struck by King's choice to have absolutely no chapters at all. None. Not sure why, but it didn't take away from the reader's immersion in the events. Overall, King invites us into a world of surprise: betrayal, heartache, terror, and an urgent awakening to what matters in the midst of it all.
