A Touch of Suspense

This is my first reading of a Kathryn Bain story. I was intrigued with the way one of the characters has her place in all three stories; it makes for some interesting continuity. The first short story in this three-story volume showed me just how frightening Bain can make her villains. I was freaked out! The one problem I had was with how abruptly it ended and how it became too cheery too fast. The second story proved just as interesting, but I was hoping for more of KT's backstory. She is such an intriguing character, but she remains quite mysterious. The villains in this one are creepy and well-written and are a nice juxtaposition to the protagonists, who you can't help but root for. The third story is a bit different because instead of a twenty-something year old protagonist, we have a teenaged girl, which gives the suspense a lift. There are also a few more dynamics at play, with creepy villains again. What Bain manages to do, though, is create very different kinds of villains who, though strikingly scary, are distinct from one another. This last story felt a bit more satisfying too as the tension got played out for quite a bit.
