Book #1 of a 4 Part series. This novel has an interesting premise--a teen girl who sleeps for months at a time due to a medical condition. Kemp creates two atmospheres for the reader in a seamless way, Bryn's awake state and Bryn's dream world. That isn't an easy feat to accomplish. There were some technical issues, however, such as the word 'alright', time-frame inconsistencies with the last time she's seen her dad (6 or 8 months) and is Dani her cousin or sister (at the beginning)? There are also a few places that need editing where Kemp uses misplaced modifiers. Another caveat is that the characters utilize cursing for no apparent reason; it didn't add anything to the story. Another issue: The boy's perspective and Bryn's (the only two POVs) sound too much alike. Also, what, exactly, does the symbol look like and why does it matter? Now, outside of all of these issues, the story does hold its own. Kemp, overall, knows how to engage us, and Bryn's ongoing sleep issue, that disrupts her school schedule and complicates life, is well written. There's a mysterious element to it all and that helps drive the story forward.
