What an intriguing book about John Paul, a unique 14-year old boy whose wisdom far surpasses other teens, though he himself doesn't realize how amazing his intelligence is. This rare trait is what makes the book work so well. Furthermore, his understanding of dedication to one's family and culture is anchored to the love of God in ways he is not yet aware. So we have this incredible story of John Paul and Father Yates, who convinces John Paul to let him accompany him on his treacherous journey to defeat a lion as part of becoming a Maasai warrior. The boy's lack of fear and doubt about accomplishing this mission juxtaposed with Father Yates's normal response of concern and slight worry makes reading their dialogue that much more endearing because we see a spark of spiritual understanding start to unfold as Father Yates engages in biblical discussion with who God and Jesus are against John Paul's belief in Enkai. The story is an incredibly important journey with a very satisfying ending.
