A rare find, this relatively shorter novel (for Koontz) plays quite differently than any of his others. Ben Chase is a Vietnam vet whose perspective we get throughout. The main character is one aspect that significantly differs from his other titles as he has never showcased the viewpoint of a veteran before. But he does an excellent job getting us inside of the war hero's head and showing the realities of PTSD. Chase doesn't care about his hero status, but the world does, and unfortunately for him, so does some unknown stalker who goes by the name of "The Judge".

At some point,l I found myself wondering if Ben was imagining The Judge.

He wasn't.

But when he discovers who he is and why he's bent on killing him, the reasons are very unlike typical Koontz fashion and fall into more of a 'normal' type of region that isn't as enthralling or as well-developed. The characters weren't too exciting as they usually are. Nevertheless, Koontz's writing style spellbinds.
