They Wish They Were Us

Jessica Goodman's debut novel is a firecracker.

Murder Mystery has never looked like this.

Elitists teens are part of a high school sorority/fraternity type of group called The Players. This is a senior year filled with a different kind of angst that hides beneath layers of major peer expectations.

Everyone is happy. Everyone else wants to be The Players. Right?

Except someone died Freshman year and its memory won't stop haunting the group.

And the truth of who killed her seems to be changing. . .

Which means someone in The Players is dangerous. . .but

the reality of who it may be is tightly wrapped up in a close-knit group that continues to shroud the reader's ability to figure out who. So well done!

There is vulgar language throughout and some sexual situations (though not graphic), but it's part of this dark-entrenched world of kids who want to grow up too fast.

I was confused at times because Jill, the MC, will suddenly jump back into the past and then back to the present without warning, so steel yourself for this shifting frequency.

But it's a story of well-crafted complexity and a rude awakening for a group of friends, with a quick pace that is both breathless and emotional.
