Don't Turn Off the Lights

Talk about being scared of the dark! If you weren't before, you will be now. Only the light can save you. Wow! Screenwriter Eric Heisserer has quite the imagination in this horror thriller. There's a sinister woman named Diana who only appears in the dark. But when you turn on the light, she disappears. Each scene is heavy-laden with taut uncertainty and intense surprise. This Diana is dark and eerie and shadowy and brings chills with each encounter. Director David F. Sandberg directs and redirects our attention in ways that leave us a bit unsettled. Like a good scary picture, Lights Out throws out jump scares, but they generate from unexpected places at hidden curves. When I see a scary movie for the first time, I normally peek between my fingers. Well, this movie got me good and shocked me when I was looking, without the protective cover of my hands, and not just once, but twice. I screamed, boy did I scream! I startled my friend, Dylan, and my husband! A very good unique and frightening film, indeed. I think the acting is sub-par, but the compelling premise makes viewing this worth it.
