Stacy Title's horror is intriguing and thoughtful. The opening scene is unforgettable and shocking and it sets up the rest of the plot effectively. There's a nice cast of characters here as well as a trio of friends--a couple and their best friend--who are all faithful to each other and have a true sense of love for one another, so throughout the movie you really care about them. This is the only way, at least for me, that a good horror movie can work. If we don't care about the characters or if they become too foolish or shallow, then the story doesn't work as well.

The Bye Bye Man is some timeless entity that gets into a person's head once he or she discovers its name and then makes that person start to see things that aren't really there. So the above-mentioned scenario, a group of trusting friends, is put to the test. The "scary" in this movie has two roles: 1) The Bye Bye Man and his pet dog, reminiscent of the creature alongside Sigourney Weaver's character in the original Ghostbusters, and 2) the illusions the friends are forced to see. The presence of the former is seen very little, but what is seen is darkly memorable. The latter is where our focus rests for the most part and these illusions create a perilous shift in the dynamic of the friendship and propel a startling cast of events that take them into bleak situations where their trust in one another and in what they see--or what they don't see--is challenged.

The movie churns out a somewhat satisfying end as it leaves room for a possible sequel.
