This King-based novel was quite dark. In the beginning of the film, there is an interesting premise--a husband and wife wanting to spice up their sex life--but when Gerald, the husband, decides that a possible rape fantasy is a good idea, we quickly learn that Jessie, his wife, is not game and that something traumatic lies in her past.
And then Gerald dies of a heart attack. And Jessie is helplessly handcuffed.
And things get stranger. And more complex.
Jessie's past is alive and well, and until she faces it, she may die too.
*******SPOILERS
The past involves something deeply disturbing. King reveals that sexual abuse has many faces and we are introduced to a moment that forever silences 12-year old Jessie, a very sick moment that will leave you feeling evil in its darkest form. This is the most unsettling part of the movie. The only thing that redeems it is that Jessie finally breaks the silence and is able to move on.
And then there's the cringe-worthy moments where a dog starts to feed on her husband, but worse is when Jessie cuts her wrist and squeezes her hand out of one of the cuffs. The makeup job is so real, too real, that you will feel your stomach curdling when you see the way her hand tears apart.
Very dark. A very revealing depiction of the damage a sick predator can do to someone for the rest of her life.
